We started off our first session of the module by firstly thinking about what we liked. We were given the task to think of 3 things and 3 people. We were not introduced to the brief straight away, just told we would need to make some sort of video. This would give us a vague understanding of how to come up with concepts for our video.
At first I was apprehensive about this as it was so broad, but tried to approach it as if it was just an exercise not my final idea. I believe this really helped to understand the extent of what our research must include, and also that our concept must be focused around storytelling.
My 3 words were:
- Dogs
- Food
- Colours
My 3 People became many people:
- Wes Anderson – can also look at Ludwig Favre & #AccidentallyWesAnderson
- Grey Malin – horses with wigs, and llamas with balloons
- Riviersneda (Carlos Neda) – digital creator of pastel interiors
- Drake On a Cake & The Sweet Feminist – cake with statements
- Aimee song & Tyler Joe for fashion video creation
We then did a brief 15 mins of research of these people – to find the link between them:
Wes Anderson;
- Age 50
- American
- Filmmaker
- Cinematography
Grey Malin;
- Fine art / aerial photographer
- American
- Famous for aerial beach photos
- Famous for photos of animals in remote locations
The Sweet Feminist;
- Baker
- Political Message
- Famous since 2018
- Uses social media / photography
Riviersneda (Carlos Neda);
- Honduras based
- Digital artist
- Creating pastel interiors
Then we all brainstormed some ideas of what the video concept could be when all of these elements are combined;
- Jef Koons – balloon dog; stainless steel, fragile, not fluffy, sculpture, material
- Colour scheme – Pastel
- Balloon food – floating food, squeaking when cutting
- People eating dog food
- Dog restaurant – dog wine?
- Dog eating but with human arms
- Isle of dogs
- Grand Budapest Hotel
- Dogs on helium – that then they meow
- Dogs riding people with balloon swords
- Edweard Muybridge style?
- Police dogs as balloons
- Responsible rehoming – not a comical approach?
These ideas were all very wild and I can imagine them being very expressive. As a first session I believe this was a great way to ease us into the process.
